I know this might sound crazy, but I feel that the white is sort of "crying" into each black piece. It looks like liquid and the black are empty holes that are slowly filling up with the white liquid.
In the last step I see a face that is screaming for help. It is almost as if all the white pieces are features to the features if that makes sense. Like the white triangle shape in the mouth looks like a pointy tooth. So the mouth is a feature made by the black and then the white makes a more specific feature, the tooth.
