I feel the black in your first piece looks like a bunch of lilly pads. It looks like a pathway for a frog to skip upon.
Even though you don't have a lot of pieces on your work, the artwork still comes alive. My eyes surprisingly were drawn to the white sapce. I see a cartoon man laying down that hook is his hair peeking over his head, and his arms are up as if he's reading a book.
